Worcester Theatres Performance Hub BTEC Students to Stage The Animals as Part of National Theatre Connections 2026

Worcester Theatres Performance Hub BTEC students will take to the Swan Theatre stage this March with The Animals, a gripping play by South London–based British-Irish playwright and screenwriter Sean Buckley. The production is part of National Theatre Connections 2026, the prestigious nationwide youth theatre festival led by the National Theatre, showcasing outstanding young performers from across the UK.

Student teacher Sam arrives at Redhill Youth Custody Secure Unit hoping to enrich the troubled residents’ lives by introducing them to the subject of Philosophy. The wary class resist engaging in this alien, ancient art of thinking, at first, but start to thaw when they find themselves being challenged and empowered in ways they haven't previously experienced. Yet the hope Sam's teaching offers them is fragile and scary for some. The Animals looks at education within the Youth Custody System and the difficulties young people face.

Aaron Corbett, WT Performance Hub Youth Tutor said, "The Animals has been a welcomed challenge for our WT Performance Hub BTEC students. The play explores philosophy, reflection and self forgiveness, through the eyes of 8 young people in a Youth Secure Unit classroom. This powerful play written by Sean Buckley has created an opportunity for our students to confront their own vulnerabilities, debate their own beliefs and create striking characters very different from themselves.

This will be our cohort’s first performance on the Swan Theatre main stage, which will give the learners the practical experience of transferring their show from the rehearsal room onto the big stage. The performance is gripping, emotive and honest. You won't want to miss it."
