The Importance of Being Earnest - The Worcester Rep are making the Commandery the place to be this Summer!

18 May 2023

Worcester’s favourite outdoor theatre event is back this Summer with a fantastic rendition of The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Presented by the Worcester Repertory Company and directed by Ian Good, you’ll be in masterful hands as you sit back in the idyllic garden setting to soak up some sunshine and splendid entertainment.

Each year the Worcester Repertory Company perform a British classic or modern adaptation from some of the most well-known playwrights at the Commandery in Worcester. This year the Worcester Rep Company will be honouring the great work of Oscar Wilde, performing what is widely considered his greatest achievement, The Importance of Being Earnest from Wed 12 – Sun 23 July. Wilde’s play is a story about lies and double lives and is a satire of Victorian society at the time, especially the hypocrisy and falseness within high society. The play is a comedy of errors, mistaken identities and a series of chaotic shenanigans all leading to long forgotten secrets being discovered – what’s not to love!

Sarah-Jane Morgan, CEO of Worcester Theatres and Artistic Director of the Worcester Repertory Company said

“I am really looking forward to bringing ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ back to the Commandery this year, which will be the Worcester Rep’s 16th year of performing outdoors in the beautiful setting! The Commandery productions are always the start of summer for me, I love witnessing the enjoyment that live theatre brings to our audiences. Seeing them relaxed and laughing in the beautiful gardens with good food and drink, enjoying the fresh air and great performances night after night is definitely the tonic we all need right now and I simply can’t wait to do it all again this year!”

Outdoor theatre at the Commandery has become a beloved institution, punters from across Worcestershire can’t wait to unpack their picnics, lay out their garden chairs and indulge in some fantastic entertainment from the renowned Worcester Rep. If you’re looking for something different to do this summer, we strongly recommend outdoor theatre at the Commandery!

The Importance of Being Earnest marks the beginning of the Worcester Fringe this year, a festival of events taking place in venues across the city, including the Worcester Rep’s performance at the Commandery. The Worcester Fringe began in 2021 and this year will be even bigger with a variety of genres and activities from theatre, dance and music to comedy, stand up and outdoor performances. There is something for everyone at the Worcester Fringe which runs from Wed 12 – Sun 30 July, so head to the Worcester Theatres’ website to discover what else is on.
