What is the Worcester Fringe?

Founded and produced by Worcester Theatres, the Worcester Fringe was established in 2021 and is an annual arts festival that has taken place all over the city. Supported in previous years by the University of Worcester, the Bransford Trust and partner venues such as Henry Sandon Hall and the Arch Rivals, the Worcester Fringe has always been about bringing fantastic and inspiring cultural events to Worcester.

This year we’re bringing the Worcester Fringe closer to home, with majority of performances taking place in our black box studio, the Swan Studio, at the Swan Theatre. This is the perfect place for aspiring and emerging creatives to show off their talent! Worcester Fringe 2024 is going to be an irresistible melting pot of Worcestershire’s finest artists and most exciting up and comers – perfect for all you culture lovers out there!

We’re making space for new ideas and new talent to flourish, and we want you to be a part of it! So, save the date, discover something new and be inspired by this stimulating, refreshing and uplifting festival of theatre and performance!

From Friday 19th July to Saturday 3rd August, audiences can expect a mixture of dark, thoughtful and political plays, with lighthearted, hilarious and touching performances, music, poetry, cabaret and more. Some highlights include a new piece by Birmingham based theatre company Stan’s Cafe called The Rivers, taking audiences on a theatrical journey of The Severn exploring its geography and history as one of the UK’s most well-loved rivers. Stan’s Cafe have been delighting audiences since 1991 and have toured globally with their hit show Of All the People in All the World, but are most excited to visit local theatres like the Swan.

There are also several performances debuting at the Fringe for the first time, such as the lighthearted coming of age story Rhymez(s*) bringing together a world of boxing and poetry performed by the Young Rep Company, and brand-new comedy As Luck Would Have It by Shelf Theatre Company, that tells the hilarious story of recently broken up Sam and Anna as they try to remain friends…

If you’re looking for variety, there will also be a new writing showcase, The Debut, from local arts company Crave Arts, a scratch night called Taster Pots @ the Swan which includes snippets from multiple new works, and an LGBTQ+ variety and cabaret style performance night Saucy @ the Fringe which returns for its fourth year at the Fringe. Saucy @ the Fringe will also include a performance from the county’s youngest ever poet laureate, Freddie Barker.

Plus, a special event for music lovers at the Culture Cafe Weekender, a completely FREE event where 6 local musicians will display their best instrumental and vocal talents. And if you’re a fan of spoken word and poetry, don’t miss the Worcester Fringe Poetry Slam, judged by former Worcestershire Poet Laureate and owner of Script Haven, Leena Batchelor, multi-slam winner Holly Winter-Hughes, and Zakariye Abdillahi whose work has been broadcast on BBC 4.

We’d like to give a special thank you to our funders, Worcester Freemasons and Bransford Trust, for their support of Worcester Fringe 2024!
