Outside In is a beautiful, sad portrait of the lives of thousands of people living in tents/doorways, buses and temporary hostels in the fifth richest nation in the world. It’s hard not to feel ashamed. What is home? What does it mean to be without a home?
This latest play from Tiffany Hosking was in its very early stages as the first 2020 Covid lockdown happened. The intervening months saw the homeless crisis worsen as most were sent off the streets into temporary accommodation (Outside In) only to be tipped back onto the streets with little notice. We follow Robyn (recently homeless because of family conflict over their non-binary gender identity) and ‘Rat Man’ homeless for 11 years. Lack of identity is a consistent feature of this look at what it means to be without a home in 21st century Britain.
